European insurers and asset managers are moving ESG investing from broad commitments into the everyday mechanics of portfolio construction, risk capital, regulation, and private markets, according to analysis of entries from Insurance Investor | European Awards.
Across the entries, respondents described a market where sustainability is increasingly treated as a financial, operational, and governance discipline rather than a separate, responsible investment overlay.
This comes despite growing pressure from several directions to move away from ESG goals. Many of the approaches highlighted were designed to be novel, distinctive, or more advanced than standard exclusion policies, with ESG now embedded directly into capital modelling, fund selection, stewardship, transition pathways, and liability-aware portfolio design.
