UK government borrowing costs have risen rapidly through 2026, driven by the impact of the Iran war on energy prices, sticky inflation, and fiscal concerns.
This week, 30-year gilt yields hit their highest level since 1998, while 10-year yields rose above 5% as investors priced in inflation risk and a greater chance of Bank of England rate hikes.
