Decarbonisation is one of the big trends in energy infrastructure and other areas of the built environment investment world.
From power production to our food supply, many are looking to find ways into this area to make a difference, including in their impact investment portfolios, or to just see good returns in an encouraging asset class.
“The new hot thing is less of the new hot thing,” says Tim Skerman, Head of Listed Investments at asset manager Morrison, referring to the renewable energy sector and decarbonisation in general. “We're learning that new technologies, like hydrogen, and other hard-to-decarbonise sectors, that technologies that can achieve [decarbonisation] sometimes need to have support and scale to get them going,” he said. “We've seen a pullback.”
