Insurers had moved decisively into private markets, but the risk frameworks supporting their portfolios had not always kept pace.
A panel of insurance investment specialists said at Insurance Investor Live | Europe two weeks ago that the challenge was no longer to add private assets to established public-market models. The panellists, including Efi Ontopoulou, Head of Credit Research at Standard Life, Luca Patacconi, Chief Risk Officer at Azimut Life, and Tom Kenny, Managing Director and Senior Vice President at Lumos Insurance, were moderated by Peter Boden, Senior Vice President, Investment Advisory at Apex Group.
Risk teams had needed to combine better information with experienced judgement if they were to understand what sat beneath headline allocations.
“Things were built for public [markets], and now we have private,” said Boden.
He framed the discussion around a central mismatch: namely, the shift exposed gaps in transparency and valuation frequency, while making consistent comparisons across mixed portfolios harder.
