Mercury General Insurance reported substantial realised investment losses as investment valuations declined and catastrophe losses affected the regional carrier. Its Q3 results, alongside those of CNA Financial and Erie Indemnity, showed contrasting investment outcomes among the mid-sized US insurers reporting for the quarter.
Mercury's net realised investment losses before tax were $262 million for Q3 2026 and $180 million for the nine months to 30 September 2026.
Net realised investment losses for the three and nine months ended 30 September 2026 resulted largely from decreases in the fair value of the company's investments during Q3 2026, primarily caused by large increases in overall market interest rates. Changes in the fair value of the company's investments are recorded as part of net realised investment gains or losses in its consolidated statements of operations under the fair value option permitted by GAAP.
