Is data the key to unlocking a way of managing public and private markets cohesively at the same time? Industry experts were convinced it could be done, but timescales and details were less certain.
In a panel discussion titled "How can you design operating models that provide unified oversight across liquid and illiquid assets while respecting their structural differences?" at InvestOps Europe 2026 this week in London, panellists were asked which operational processes can realistically be shared across public and private assets.
The panel brought together Andrew Austen, Director, Investment Operations, and Chief Operating Officer, Institutional Retirement, at Legal & General Investment Management; Danielle Johnston, Chief Operating Officer, Europe, at Principal Asset Management; Colin O'Donovan, Director and Head of Global Funds Operations at Clearstream; and Alun Cutler, Executive Director, Commercial Development, at SimCorp. Michael Cummins, Solutions Architect at FundGuard, moderated the discussion.
Key questions put to the panel included:
• Which operational processes can realistically be shared across public and private assets?
• How are firms addressing data gaps around valuation, cash flows, and documentation?
• What governance models work best for hybrid portfolios?
• How does private market growth impact risk, reporting, and operational resilience?
