Andrew Putwain: Can you introduce yourself, your role within the organisation and Allspring’s ethos around its investment strategy

Robert Absey: I am Head of Allspring’s Insurance Solutions Business – an insurance practice that manages over $50 billion in assets on behalf of over 80 insurers in a variety of investment strategies that meet the needs of all types of insurance companies – life and health, property and casualty, global reinsurers, captives, and risk retention groups.

Our ethos around investment strategies, particularly as it relates to insurance companies, is that insurers are highly regulated entities, and as a result, have unique and specific investment objectives and service requirements. Customised and bespoke solutions are often required to meet multiple and oftentimes conflicting client objectives. Whether it be to maximise book yield, achieve a specific income target for total return or modified total return, it’s always done so in a risk-controlled manner, minimising negative credit migration, and almost always within constrained guidelines.

Our emphasis is on bottom-up security selection, robust fundamental research and relative value, which drives stability, consistency, and reliability of performance.
