Nat cat losses, including from Hurricane Melissa, were massive in 2025. What will it mean?

2025 marks the sixth year in which insured natural catastrophe losses have exceeded $100 billion, according to the Swiss Re Institute.

Insured losses from natural catastrophes again surpassed the $100 billion mark in 2025, marking the sixth consecutive year, according to a paper from the institute.

This could weigh heavily on the investments of insurers for a variety of reasons, ranging from underwriting losses putting pressure on investment returns to the need to reassess their investment portfolios to mitigate any losses from the natural catastrophes.
