William KN Chan has been appointed as Chief Investment Officer and Head of Investments for Global Insurance with immediate effect at HSBC Life.
Based in Hong Kong, he will report to Edward Moncreiffe, Chief Executive Officer, Global Insurance.
“[Chan] brings a wealth of knowledge in asset management and investment and has been instrumental in the successful expansion of HSBC Life Hong Kong's investment portfolio," said the company on the announcement.
In this newly created role, Chan will be responsible for leading a team of investment specialists out of Hong Kong that will "consolidate expertise and experience" across HSBC's multiple existing CIO teams, to deliver what the press release called “a more synergistic institutional investment capability” for HSBC’s more than $130 billion of investment assets and over $13 billion of investment-linked assets in Asia and internationally.
Chan's new duties will take include global accountability for the investment portfolio, as well as the Strategic Asset Allocations functions, and HSBC’s linked investment capabilities, the release said.
With more than three decades of industry experience, HSBC's statement said that Chan "possesses broad market knowledge across major asset classes and asset-liability management". In his previous roles, he has worked at HSBC Asset Management and UBS Asset Management in Hong Kong and the UK. Since 2016, he has been CIO of HSBC Life Hong Kong.
He has also been one of the leaders of the Green Task Force of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and has contributed to the launch of the Hong Kong Insurance Industry Climate Charter, in which HSBC Life Hong Kong is a founding signatory.
